Earth Givers’ 6th Trip to Haiti
August 28, 2013
Before leaving for Haiti we already had 20 goats donated for the women to start a small business. The project One Goat = 20 Trees requires the women who receive a goat to plant 20 trees near her home or around the community. This was a nice extension of our goal to encourage the women to plant trees. The women received instructions on care of the baby goats and their health will be monitored over time. Jane is actively involved in planting and giving away trees to anyone who will plant them.
During this trip we developed another exciting project: Creating Social Equity and Food Security for Women in Haiti through Literacy. Earth Givers is raising funds for a year-long literacy project with 100 women in both Nan Payol and Robin villages. Naturally many other women (and men) wanted to join the project but it was limited to a hundred women, roughty 60 from Nan Payol and 40 from the smaller village of Robin. Once we have the first round of the project funding secured we will continue to finding funding to expand beyond 100 women sine this project has already gained so much interest from folks.
In other good news, Jane’s daughter, Melissa, is bringing her family back to Kenscoff. She began working with the women in the early years of the Women Who Plant initiative and is a huge assest for our program. We are thankful and excited to have her back!
THANK YOU ALL who donated the goats – we will post pictures soon!
